So what do you buy for a loved one on a special day?
Flowers maybe?
Or something sparkly?
After so many years one gets to know another person, and their quirks, quite well. Although I happen to like both flowers and sparklies that wasn't quite the right gift for the occasion.
One evening when I arrived home after work this week this guy greeted me at the door.
Nothing says love like yard art.
I think I just found my next garden project. He's going to look perfect swimming through a sea of ornamental grass.

DeleteI forgo the jewels too. My husband gave me roses this week and they were the salmon color of my cockatoo. Weirdly, that was romantic. Love your yard art. It really is unique.
ReplyDeleteIt's really the thought that counts isn't it? No one else would know the colour your bird is and that little detail makes all the difference.
DeleteSo..is it Nova Scotia folk art? I have to ask of course. Beautiful, rustic, kind of quirky and barracuda like. Now that's a great gift.

Brenda, it was either New Brunswick or Nova Scotia. Unfortunately cannot remember who the artist is. I love the description of barracuda, that fits it perfectly. The nails were my favourite part.

They actually aren't flowers but the leaves of Spirea Goldflame. In the spring the foliage is almost a chartreuse with orange tints before it mellows to green in the summer.

ReplyDeleteThe idea of a fish swimming through grass is great -- I actually saw a small school of glass fish cresting undulating waves of low hakonechloa at Missouri Botanical Garden, and thought the whole look was inspired. I want to see your anniversary fish in a sea of grass this summer!
I like these ideas of smaller fish 'swimming' around the big guy. The grass to me just makes so much sense as fish often swim through aquatic grass and grass just has that movement in a breeze. This really is a big fish though. Could take a season or three to get grasses big enough to encompass him.
DeleteIt is a very good thing when your spouse gets what it is that you really like. An excellent piece of garden art - and very appropriate for a PEI garden, I would think. As a landlubber, though, I have to wonder: barracuda? flying fish? shark (or land shark)?
ReplyDeleteI didn't show it in the picture but it's mounted on a large post so my immediate thought was flying fish but I love the suggestions of barracuda. Those teeth are something else.
