There are signs I look for each year to indicate the change of season. Some of them more reliable than others.
The disappearance of the ice from the Northumberland Strait.

Muddy laneways.

Marguerite, We're in very similar conditions in Maine -- half-melted snow, muddy ruts that keep getting deeper, stale Christmas decorations. Not exactly a pretty season, but with so much promise! -Jean
ReplyDeleteJean, I find this time of year the toughest. We're so close to being able to get outdoors and do summer activities but the mud and the inconsistent temperatures really put a damper on things.

ReplyDeleteMud season is exactly the name for it. No light coloured clothing for the next month. Red mud stains.
DeleteWe haven't had the snow you've had, but that muddy lane sure looks like home:) I laughed at your Christmas decorations--I have some still sitting in a pot outside, too. Every time I think of them, they're frozen in the pot's soil, so I can't pull them out!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had the excuse that these were frozen but it's just florists foam at the bottom of that container. I'm just too lazy to move them.

DeleteI am much harder to please. It'll take more than a partly-melted snow to convince me that Spring is in the air. I need riots of tulips, cherry blossoms, the smell of fresh cut grass, and a day warm enough to enjoy a vodka tonic sitting in the backyard at tea time. I say, if we hold Spring to higher standards we might be able to shame her into showing up on time.

Two votes for leaving the decorations out! There's something festive about BBQ'ing amidst christmas decorations. Paper lanterns are so last year ;-)

ReplyDeleteWe officially put away the skis and the snowshoes last week Frances. It was fun while it lasted but I'm ready for the next season.
DeleteThe BBQ seems a little optimistic, but I guess that's the end of the skiing for another year! Rather wonderful to live somewhere where the change in seasons is marked but such dramatic happenings. And I am not referring to the appearance of RVs...
ReplyDeleteSkiing is definitely done now. We went again last weekend and it was just too icy to be fun anymore. That is one thing I love about living out here, there is no missing the changing of the seasons.

The thought of dragging that container to the garage through the snow was stopping me. It's cast iron and quite heavy!
