Daylily Bouquets

The daylilies (ditch lilies) have been blooming their heads off these past few weeks.  Under the poplars there is an explosion of orange.

Initially the double flowered pink roses were in bloom as well which made me smile.  What an unlikely combination but it's rather nice.

Both of these plants were here when we moved in.  Remnants of an old garden?  I couldn't resist gathering up some of the blooms to bring indoors.  But what to put next to that bright orange?

I went in the opposite direction of light pink and instead picked a dark contrasting purple using Darwin's Blue Speedwell, then filling out the bouquet with white astilbe and flowering ciltantro.

What I have discovered about daylilies though is the blooms, as the name suggests, only last a day.  My bouquet fell flat in short order.  Lucky for me there's a ton of daylilies out there so I just picked a whole new batch and tried something different.

Instead of contrasting colours I tried complementary.  Orange daylilies with chartreuse lady's mantle, white shasta daisies and white feverfew.

Have I mentioned how delighted I am these days to have a garden with enough flowers for picking?

Ditch lilies are my favorite. I have cultivars of daylilies and they are ok, but it is the wild, exuberant ORANGE daylilies growing everywhere by the side of the road in July that I love. Your bouquets are lovely!

Gorgeous color combinations! I am partial to orange and purple. Bringing flowers indoors is not something I do often enough. Thanks for the reminder.

beautiful bouquets both of them Marguerite, I love the blue of your speedwell, the daylilies under the trees do look cheery and like they are calling to you from the shadows 'hey look at me' Frances

It is nice to roll out the door and pink flowers fresh for the picking.I did the same last summer and picked a big bunch of lilies only to have them look rather bedraggled the next day. I like the combination of purple and orange. It is unexpected. The second bouquet is nice as well. Have a great weekend Marguerite!

Count me as someone else who loves the orange-blue color combination in your bouquet -- and the white is perfect for making it work. I don't cut daylilies for the house very often, but when I do I try to pick stems that have one flower open and 3 or 4 buds that look as though they will open in the next few days; That way, as one flower fades, another takes its place. -Jean

Those bouquets are really pretty no matter the colour Marguerite .. I don't pay attention to the dreaded colour wheel rules etc .. I do what I like and have a great time with it : )

Jean, I realized I should be picking scapes with extra buds after the first bouquet! Now that I know I've got a bit longer lasting bouquet. Always something to learn!

Frances, I definitely think those flowers call out to me too. There's no ignoring that shock of orange across the yard.
