Triumphs and Tragedies

Triumph

I bought plants.  Lots and lots of plants.  On sale.

There is Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight'

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diablo' otherwise known as Diablo Ninebark

Ligularia 'Osiris Cafe Noir' and 'Osiris Fantaisie'
After seeing this for the first time at the gardens at Green Gables I had to find my own!

I am really really really excited.

And I have no place to put this stuff.  Well sure, if you count the 3 acres of lawn and one measly flower bed but there's no prepared spots for all these plants and the flower bed is already crowded with my spring purchases.

Tragedy

I'm back to digging out patches of lawn to make room for the plants.

ugh.

I am so tired of digging.

I love your plant choices. Both the Limelight hydrangea and the Diablo ninebark have been on my radar as plants I'd like to add to my garden. These ligularias are new to me, but at least one of them may well make it onto my wishlist. Good luck with the digging. -Jean

I'm jealous! I haven't bought anything new to plant in the last couple of months because it's been so hot. You're tired of digging, I'm tired of watering.

Jean, I love green flowers. I always thought if I were to have a hydrangea this would be the one. I'm not really familiar with Ninebark but I've seen it in other bloggers gardens and it fit my needs perfectly - foliage, winter interest, will help to create some privacy and it's size suits the largeness of this yard. In fact I bought 3 of them!

Kyna - you're right, not the best time for planting. Normally I wouldn't be out buying but I ran across a sale that was too good to pass up. I have a lot of yard to fill!

What a wonderful problem to have ;-) I just love buying new plants, but finding places to plant them can be a challenge.

Noelle, I'm incredibly lucky to have so much space. It's a luxury with both the house and property, there's more space than we have need for but it comes in awful handy.

Oooo, someone is a lucky girl. When I bought Kilbourne Grove, I was in a bit of the same boat. No flower beds, all lawn, although only 3/4 of an acre, I am envious of your three. To make it easier for me, especially for those impulse purchases, my very first bed was my Kitchen Garden. Eight raised beds, in a pattern, were constructed. Now I had an area, for any veggies and herbs, but also a place I could hold plants until I had a flower bed to plant them in.

Deborah, funny, I have ended up with extra chives and dahlias in my veggie plot for just that reason. I've been diligently cleaning up the front flower bed and expanding it to accommodate plants as a 'holding' spot but even that is no longer enough space with this last load of plants.

Make sure you give Limelight LOTS of room. I got a small one like that a few years ago and in year 3 it really took off. The flowers are so plentiful and so heavy that the branches get weighed down and the shrub is wider in the late summer than you might expect. The good news is it takes to a hard pruning in the spring and bounces back in no time. Enjoy!
