Times They Are a Changing

... to borrow a line from Bob.

I have news.  incredible and terrible news.  I've gone back to school.

I wish I could say horticultural school which would be way
more interesting to you folks but the day job won out
I'm kind of shocked and apalled at myself but it's a done deal.  I've completed the (multiple) applications, filled out the (numerous) forms and most importantly paid the fee.  Then two weeks ago I actually sat down and took a class..

..and panicked.

I forgot how hard this is.  Even harder now that it's been 13 years since I last took a class.  I keep hearing phrases like "this will be on the exam" and "due Friday".  I've been feeling a wee bit queasy.

Why go back now?

A matter of pride.  I spent four years in post secondary school and received two diplomas but no degree.

That has been a thorn in my side.  I want that degree.

I also want my credentials to be current and competitive.  Work experience is grand but you've got to keep up with the Jones' so to speak.

So I did some research and found I could change my diplomas to a degree by adding a few courses to my roster.

Which brings us to this.  I'm busy.  Silly busy.  But still committed to blogging.  Sporadic, unpredictable, I may not always respond to your comments but I still love you, kind of blogging.  If I disappear for a time know that I'm probably cursing over a legal research memorandum...

....but I will be back.

Marguerite girl ! That is wonderful !!
I understand how hard it must be to crack the whip and buckle under .. so many phrases we can use eh ? LOL .. law was my major in university and I did enjoy it .. I guess because you have to love a good argument to be a good lawyer ? haha
Don't worry about the blogging girl .. just concentrate on this fantastic opportunity and the best of luck !!

Oh girl, it sounds like you have a tiger by the tail. Not to worry, I know you will wrestle it and make it a house cat. You can do it. Don't worry about replying to comments. Just study hard and surpass those Joneses. Best of luck.

Good for you!!
Don't worry about blogging sporadically, just think you will have more to blog about.
So excited for you.
Degree's do spell more money and a better leg up the food chain when applying for jobs.
I went back and received my engineering degree which opened lots of doors and a greater potential for us if we ever move one day.

Way to go! Good for you! I went back at an 'advanced' age to get my hort diploma - something I'd always wanted and it led me on fantastic new paths! Fabulous things will happen for you - just make it so!

Marguerite-congratulations!! I went back to school after many years out, finished a degree started much earlier and then went on. You will LOVE being a mature student--so much more focused.

Again, congrats!

Good for you Marguerite! I know first hand how hard it is. I failed the accounting class I took not so long ago, but I did walk away with enough understanding to manage the books of a small company, which is what I intended. Good luck with your studies. You'll do fine!! And you have lots of loyal blogging friends and good friends are always there when you need them.

Well done, I did my degree after 9 years out of school. It takes a little getting used to, it took me 6 years to complete but it feels great once you do so stay strong and good luck :)

Hooray for you!! Several years ago I had to take 3 classes during my school year so I could change my certification and escape a miserable position. It was tough but I was so glad I'd done it when it was all over and I had a new job. Hang tough. You can do this! :o)

Congratulations, Marguerite! You may feel a bit "rusty," but from personal experience, I've found that older students often are more motivated and do better in class because of their experience. I know you're going to be so glad you did this!

This is exciting news, Marguerite! I was out of school for five years between college and grad school, and I was terrified my first day of grad school. (It didn't help that in my first class, statistics, the Prof. handed out a sheet of "review algebra" that was all entirely new to me.) It turned out, though, that all that life experience and continued brain development in those five years meant that I was actually much smarter at 26 than I had been at 21 (and was much less likely to get hysterical when things got hard). I hope you'll be similarly surprised to find that you are much better prepared for this educational adventure than you thought you were. -Jean

p.s. As a teacher, I love having older students in class; they are just much more interesting and thoughtful people.

Things continue to be quite busy but I wanted to say a BIG thank you and hugs to everyone for being so supportive and kind. Things are zooming along here, summer is in full swing, the garden bursting. I've got loads to say but not quite the time to say it. Wishing everyone the best and hope to talk to you all soon. ~M
