Flowers of Summer

I was at someone's house the other day and they had a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers for the table.  It occurred to me I haven't picked a single bouquet this summer!  Where's my head been at?  I usually start bringing blooms indoors in the spring.

So I came home and decided to bring some summer colour into the house.

I've become infatuated with Pinterest lately and pinning flower arrangements has got me a bit preoccupied.  Funny how I manage to pin bouquets but not create one of my own!

What I do like about Pinterest though is the variety of arrangements and colour combinations there to inspire me.  Pink and yellow is something I have seen online and I knew I wanted to use peonies as they are at their peak right now.  I just needed to find some yellow.  Luckily I was able to find just what I was looking for.

Peonies don't get much better than this.
Lady's mantle is a beautiful yellow/chartreuse and makes excellent filler in a bouquet.  Light and airy compared to the peonies.  A few hosta leaves added for some greenery and voila.

Welcome to summer.

Absolutely beautiful. I don't have peonies and I drool every time I see them. They are finished blooming here as well as the Lady's Mantle. I even like the blue foliage of LM in bouquets. Don't you love this time of year?? I do.

Marguerite girl .. weird things are happening to some of my cone flowers too .. wet weather ? lack of strong sunshine?
Yes .. I use to do flat leaf parsley and I didn't this year so I have to make a note for next year .. in fact a LOT of notes for next year!
I love Lady's Mantle flowers too ! I think they are gorgeous with just about everything in the garden.
Pinterest has me crazy .. I can get lost on their for such a long time .. then I think my boards are so not organized and I only have a few compared to so many people .. DUH ? .. my actual real life house needs to be cleaned and organized and I am worrying about Pinterest?? LOL ... we are funny creatures aren't we?
That bouquet is beautiful girl !

How strange - I am exactly the same ! I usually have a bunch or two of flowers in the house from Spring but have not even had one this season. I think it is because I find it harder and harder to pick them, as I love to see them in the garden. I can't bear it and would rather BUY cut flowers ! What is going on !!

Gorgeous! I rarely cut flowers from the garden and bring them inside. For some reason I think they will last longer outside than in a vase. But they are so pretty and to enjoy them in combinations that can only be created in a vase is stunning! I love the idea of putting hosta leaves in an arrangement!

Lovely photos, the peony is especially pretty. My peonies are all finished now. I don't normally bring flowers into the house, I want them to last for as long as possible and I am also worried about bringing insects from outside into my house as I have many indoor plants and don't want them to be infected with garden pests. Only exception is daffodils, they flower so early in the year that I don't need to worry about pests :-)

Thanks Lisa, there's very little not to like about Lady's Mantle. love the fuzzy leaves in rain, the flowers are great in bouquets, they complement just about anything in the garden..

Joy, I have no idea what the deal is with the coneflowers but I do hope it isn't permanent. Mine were just starting to attain some size last year, really don't want them to die back this year. Hilarious! my house could use a good cleaning too but pinning is so much easier. :)

Jane, I've thought the very same thing. Saw cut flowers for sale and have been very tempted to buy. Cause I don't have enough flowers?! silly girl

Karin, I hate to take away flowers from the insects but since we have such a large property a few flowers doesn't matter too much. And I love having something pretty inside the house, in those rooms where I can't see my garden from the window.

Thank you Lisa! I love everything about Lady's mantle, the flowers in arrangements, the fuzzy leaves (especially when it rains). Such a great plant and they complement just about any other flower in the garden.

Pinterest does have great inspiration for bouquets doesn't it? I always mean to refer to them when I make my own attempts at flower arranging, but I forget more often than not.
Your peonies, Lady's Mantle and hosta foliage is a very pretty combination. Fresh flowers in the house is one of the great bonuses of summer flower gardens.

Beautiful bouquet! The Lady's Mantle is a perfect backdrop for this gorgeous peony bloom. I go through cycles with Pinterest, but I've never thought to look for bouquet ideas. Your comment reminds me of a joke I read that applies to me: "How come my Mom has hundreds of delicious recipes on her Pinterest board, but we're eating bologna sandwiches for lunch?":)

Jennifer, I couldn't agree more. I think one of the perks of having a flower garden is to collect flowers for the house!

LOL, yes the dilemma of Pinterest. Too busy pinning to actually carry out any of the wonderful ideas on there :)

Lovely peonie - mine are well over now - but you can't beat lady's mantle for adding to arrangements.

I remember being shocked when I was reading Piet Oudolf's *Designing with Plants* to come to the opinion that "...most of us believe that pink and yellow 'do not work,'...." and I thought, "Are you crazy? Who thinks this? Haven't they ever seen pink magnolias blooming in spring with yellow forsythia?" This combination of pink peonies and Lady's mantle are another great counter-example. -Jean
