Apple Blossoms in May

This year everything is on a fast track it seems.  The weather grew hotter earlier, the bulbs began to bloom weeks ahead of schedule and the apple blossoms followed closely behind.  In mid-May the pink buds were already starting to appear.

By the last week of May several of the trees were in full bloom.

As I checked back through the blog I realized that last year the apple trees weren't fully blooming until mid-June (see the post I Spy).  We are at least two weeks ahead of schedule this year.

Because of the variety of trees here not every tree blooms at the same time.

This yellow transparent apple tree is an early bloomer and it produces apples very early in the season as well.

Other trees follow in succession.

The pink buds slowly unfurling to reveal soft white blooms.

Normally we would get a couple weeks of blooms as each tree opens up.

But this year they faded quickly.  A cold wind blew in and the temperatures have gone unseasonably low.  We went from branches laden with flowers.

To the ground littered with petals

It's only the beginning of June and already the blooms are gone for the season.  I'm hoping the pollinators had enough time to do their work.  Only time will tell as the fruit begins to form in the coming months.

This spring I think we all are about 2 weeks ahead of last year! Strange weather.

It's been a cold wet spring in many places....wondering what the summer will bring.

Your shots are gorgeous, love those soft pinks. I am still getting used to a late start to a season that will be shorter. It might take me a while.

Here's wishing you a harvest to fill your needs. Sad to see the petals blown down already.

I have been trying to figure out wether the garden is ahead of schedule or not. I think the lack of rain in early May slowed us down quite a bit and I think we are right on track, but not as far ahead as you seem to be in P.E.I.
I planted your lavatera seeds the other day. Thanks again! I do not seem to have much of a green thumb when it comes to seeds, but fingers crossed, I hope I get a few pretty pink flowers.

Very strange was the early heat but now the cold is unbelievable. We've gone back to turning on the furnace! I can't believe we're having to do that in June.

Thanks Jen, after looking at your photos of apple blooms I played a bit with enhancements in these shots hoping to achieve something similar. I've got a long way to go though learning photography! I still miss the early springs on the west coast but now I"m learning to appreciate the different seasons here. I'm sure you'll find things to love in your new location very quickly and the short seasons won't feel so strange.

Fortunately we aren't dependent on a big harvest so anything we get will be fine but it's sad to see the blooms gone so quick. They are one of my favourite parts of the year.

It's funny Jennifer, some things just sprang ahead but this recent bout of cold weather really stopped us in our tracks. I'm hoping it passes soon as the vegetable garden has completely stalled. I'm sure the lavatera will grow fine. I just threw them down last year in the ground, made sure to water and within a week or two they were on their way. You'll likely be overloaded with pink flowers before you know it.

Your apple trees are so beautiful! Pollinators are much more efficient than we realize so I bet you'll have plenty of apples. Ok - now I'm craving apple pie!!

We are about three weeks ahead of schedule this year. It has been interesting and challenging to adjust to it, to accept it. Your apple tree blooms are beautiful!

Hi Marguerite: I know how busy you and hubby were getting ready for you new roof, so I totally understand not having time to get over..as we passed the sign to Canoe Cove on the way to the bridge,my husband said we'd try and find you one day..I was sure the weather was about 2 weeks ahead while there..last year I was in a winter coat most of the time..this year I got to see our apple trees blossom and see the lupins bloom in our ditch out front..neither of which happened in 2011..our trees bloomed one after the other too and we have a yellow transparent also..and a MacIntosh, don't know what the others are..I also took pictures of the blooms and the gorgous chestnut tree buds opening..my peonies are opening now and so are my clematis back home..what a glorious time of year..happy gardening Lannie

I remember being smitten with your apple trees last year. I hope with you that the pollinators had ample time to work their magic. I hope this early-ness doesn't mean winter will be early!

You're probably quite right Tammy and we'll be hit with more apples than we can use again. But it was a bit worrisome seeing all those petals floating across the yard.

I just read your post about the weather there Michelle. It's been a tough pill to swallow this season accepting the quick changes of highs and lows in the weather.

Last year was so unseasonably cool when you visited and this year it was so hot! Perhaps next year we'll hit it just right? and hopefully I'll be a little less busy and have more time for visiting :)

Cat I hadn't thought of winter coming early, that would be a big downside wouldn't it?
