House Renovation #127,891

Well maybe not quite that many, but it sure feels like it some days.

Anyone want to take a guess what's going on here?

If you look closely at the photo below you can see the paint on our house has been peeling quite badly for some time.  I often find strips of paint laying in my garden beds.

First step, scrape it off.

Next step....

Oh girl you must be young... or at least young at heart. Best wishes. You can be so proud of all your work.

Marguerite,
That's a lot of hard work and elbow grease. The results will be very satisfying when completed and so much better looking than vinyl siding. We have vinyl and I hate it. It squeaks and cracks during expansion of the hot sun and high winds, plus piece tend to fall off.
Have you tried a power washer on a very low setting as to not ruin the wood, some people swear by it?
Both our garden shed and gazebo have cedar singles and I just love the look and the durability that have shown so far.

Young and naive perhaps? ;-) I have a feeling this is going to be a looonng summer.

Interesting that you have problems with vinyl. My parents have it and love it but they're in a much different climate. The cedar shingles here are original so we're doing what we can to preserve them. Jody did a lot of research and pressure washing on cedar is a big no no. I know a lot of people do it but the wood soaks up the water and within a couple years your paint is peeling (we rather suspect that was what was done before we moved in, as the house looked quite good then and now the paint is literally peeling off in strips). Stripping is hard work but hopefully the results will be longer lasting.

Looks like a daunting job! Good luck! I'll do almost anything inside my house, but I've never ventured to do anything to the outside. Your house looks tall - stay safe!

Heck, rather you than me, that is a LOT of painting...

Big job, but it will be so worth it in the end. Just keep imagining it finished...and sitting on the porch.

I think this can be an amazing project!!

I hear you, Marguerite:) It seems like we have been going from one project to another at our house lately, though nothing as major as painting the exterior. The good part is, once you have the scraping done, painting your house will seem like fun!

It is really really tall. A HUGE ladder had to be bought as part of this project. Luckily my part of the job, rather than going up the ladder, involves staying on the ground with a phone to call 911 should anyone fall.

I'm expecting this to take the entire summer..

LOL. Jen, the other task is replacing the porch.....

I'm hoping the results will make it all worthwhile

in so many ways :) we're creating memories as well as working.

Jody keeps saying the prep is the hardest part of the job. The painting will seem a breeze after all the scraping and sanding.
