Triumphs and Tragedies

Tragedy
I woke up bright and early on Thursday morning to discover this.

It's no surprise really.  I knew it was coming but it's a little disheartening to discover the gardening season really is at a close.

Triumph

The positive side of frost is how it encourages the trees to show off their incredible colours.

My previous home in southern British Columbia does not have colours like this.  The climate there is that of a temperate rainforest and the trees are of a different breed.  Seeing how the fall landscape changes here in Prince Edward Island is really thrilling for me.  Something I doubt I'll ever get tired of.

Hi Marguerite - wow, that's a hard frost! We've had a few mornings close to 0 degrees but no actual frost yet. I really appreciate your photos as I pine away for PEI.

The sight of a frost is a horrid thing in my book, but your fall colors more than make up for it! Beautiful leaves!

So, so beautiful!!! The change of seasons is always spectacular. 12 months of summer isn't for me. I love the pix of the leaves on the forest floor.

I'm glad for the frost because like you mentioned it really helps the trees leaves to change into beautiful colours. We took the garden out last week and just have beets left so I may try and rescue them this weekend. I'm just hoping this won't be a bad Winter. Last year we really did get off easy.

Jane- when a nor'easter blows in I'll take some photos for you. You may not be pining away for PEI when that happens!

Floridagirl - Isn't that just it. For every negative there's a positive. Can't have those gorgeous leaves without the frost.

TS - Thanks! Hard not to take a good picture at this time of year. There's colour everywhere you look.

The Witch - I spent yesterday pulling out the last of my veggie plot. I'm going to try and overwinter some carrots but the rest is now sleeping under a layer of straw. Fingers crossed this isn't a bad winter, I'm still a neophyte when it comes to these things.

That carpet of leaves is beautiful. I don't mind frost, so long as I can stay inside!

Bub - I have that hibernating instinct starting to kick in. All I want to do these days is sit inside with a cup of cocoa.

I do miss that incredible fall colour.Ours comes late in November and is not nearly as exquisite. I will have to go out and bring some camellias in to compensate!
